<p>What was <b>the Draft</b>?</p>

A

<p>The Draft was a system where men over the age of 18 could be drafted into compulsory Military Service at any time and could be sent to fight in the war at any time.</p>

A

<p>The Draft unfarily targetted young men and gave them innadequate training.
Also, poorer black men were also targeted</p>

<p>What were differnet methods used to avoid the draft?</p>

A

<p>College students, those working in the Church and some government and industry workers were exempt
The physically and mentally unfit were also exempt
If you could prove that joining up would leave your family in a position of ‘hardship’, or that you were the only son, you could be exempt
If your religious or moral views meant you couln't fight, you could become a Concientious Objector. However, you still had to do other war work such as working in weapons factories</p>

<p>What was the <b>My Lai Massacre</b>?</p>

A

<p>On the 16th March 1968, the Army were sent to the village of My Lai to find fiding Vietcong
However, when they arrived, there were no Vietcong in the village, only elderly men, women and children
In 4 hours, all the villagers were killed</p>

<p>Why did the My Lai Massacre cause outrage in the US?</p>

A

<p>The My Lai incident caused a kot of outrage as the Army originally covered it up
The Army announce 128 Vietcong were killed and that their base had been destroyed
An enquiry found 347 civilians had been killed and Lieutenant Calley, who led Charlie Company, was charged with the murder of 22 civilians and was sentenced to life in prison
However, Calley was only confined to base rather than prison and was released after 3 and a helf years</p>
