Q

What is succession

A

Eco systems dynamic
Succession happens in stages at each stage the plants and animal communities in area are slowly changed and this changes the environmental conditions which makes environment suitable for more species with different adaptations

Biotic conditions change as the abiotic conditions change - one community of organisms to be succeeded by another

4
Q

What is primary succession

A

Happens on land that’s been nearly formed or exposed

Eg when volcano has erupted to form new rock surface or where sea level has dropped exposing new area or lane

No soil or organic material here - just hate rock

Q

What species does pinoneer succession start with ?

A

They start when species colonise new land surface.

Seeds / spores blown in by wind and grow

First species to colonise area are pioneer species

Abiotic conditions are harsh so pioneer species only grow as adapted

Q

Example

Hostile abiotic conditions

A

Limited water available because soil has no water retention

Few minerals / nutrients as no soil

Exposure to wind / rain

Fluctuating temps

Q

Example

Pioneer species

A

Marram grass - sandunes/ deep roots to get water and tolerate salty environment

Lichens - fungus/ rocky conditions as fungus secrete acids which erode rock releasing minerals

8
Q

What happens when the pioneer species die ?

A

They change the abiotic conditions as they die the microorganisms decompose the dead organic material forming basic soil

^ making less hostile conditions as soil helps retain water so new organisms can now grow - these organism then die& decay adding more organic material which makes soil deeper& richer

Q

What does nitrogen fixing bacteria do ?

A

Turns nitrogen from atmosphere into ammonia which is used by plants

So larger / comped plants like shrubs can grow

11
Q

What do the dominant species do ?

A

They out compete the species and plants already there

Cause most change to the abiotic environment making it more suitable for other species

Q

What happens to environment as succession goes on and on ?

A

Ecosystem more complex as more species move in alongside existing species

Plants create more habitats and act as food source for organisms

Biodiversity AND biomass increases

Abiotic conditions less hostile

13
Q

What is climax community

A

Ecosystem supporting the largest most complex community of plants and animals it can

Won’t change much more after this

Steady state

Q

What do trees do in evosystemt ?

A

Reduce light available to shorter plants

Help stabilise fluctuating temps

Increase air humidity
Provide shade
Reduce wind
All moderate temp

15
Q

What is secondary succession ?

A

When the land that’s been cleared at all plants but the soil remains

After forest fire or deforestation

The community of species is destroyed but without too much disturbance to soil

16
Q

How is secondary succession different to primary ?

A

Soil is already present in secondary but not in primary so secondary starts at later stage and climatic climax is reached more quickly

17
Q

What happens when succession is stopped artificially

A

The climax community is called plagioclimax

18
Q

Example of how humans prevent succession

A

Regularly mown grassy field which could but can’t develop shrubs and trees as growing points or woody plants are cut off by lawnmower

The longer the interval between mowing the further succession can go and more diverse area becomes. But less diversity/ progression If mowing happens regularly.
Also affects wider biosievety as less stems etc mean less insects etc

19
Q

What is the climax community for a particulate climate called ?

A

Climatic climax

20
Q

Exmpale

The temperate climate of the uk

A

Lots of water
Mild temps
Not much change between season

Climatic climax contains large trees becyass they can grow in these conditions once deep soils have developed

21
Q

Example

Polar climate

A

Not much water available
Big changes between seasons

Larger trees won’t ever be able to grow

Climatic climax only contains herbs / shrubs
