Why was Kansas-Nebraska a problem?
The balance between free and slave states was at risk of being unbalanced, because Congress did not know how to split Nebraska. If Nebraska was admitted as a state the Missouri compromise of 1820 would be broken.
What were the terms of Douglas’ Kansas-Nebraska act?
An extension of the Nebraska territory, a substantial part of Nebraska would be split into Dakota and smaller sections in Colorado and Idaho, popular sovereignty allowed in new territories.
How was Douglas’ bill amended by Southerners?
The territory would be split into 2 states, Kansas and Nebraska, Slavery still had no chance of taking ahold in Nebraska but in Kansas it had a slight chance.
Why did the Kansas-Nebraska act cause uproar in the North?
Northerners believed it was an expansion of the slave power conspiracy.
