4- Plasma Proteins Flashcards
Name 4 functions of albumin
translocate bilirubin in bloodstream; binds and transports fatty acids, translocate steroid hormones and drugs (like penicillin, aspirin and sulfa drugs)
What is the normal concentration of albumin in the serum?
4 g/dL
In which organ is albumin synthesized?
the liver
Which major class of plasma proteins is not synthesized in the liver?
Gamma Globulins (immunoglobulins- synthesized in B-lymphocyte lineage)
What is the most abundant plasma protein in normal humans?
Albumin
Which plasma protein binds iron?
beta globulins (transferrin and Hemoplexin)
How are fatty acids transported in the plasma?
by binding with albumin
What is the major fetal plasma protein?
alpha-1 fetoglobulin
Which plasma protein binds and transports vitamin A derivatives?
Retinol-binding protein (RBP, an alpha-1 globlulin)
What plasma protein binds and transports cortisol?
Cortisol Binding Globulin (an alpha-1 globulin)
What plasma proteins binds and transports iron?
Transferrin
Which plasma protein binds and transports testosterone?
Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG, a b-globulin)
What happens to free hemoglobin in the serum?
Some of hemoglobin binds to haptoglobin and transported back to the liver to be re-used
What would happen if haptoglobin were absent?
A lot of hemoglobin would be lost in the urine/kidneys
Name a blue protein. What is its funciton?
Ceruloplasmin. It oxidizes free Fe2+ to Fe3+ in plasma
