What is chaining?
- gently bring patient’s hand to mouth whilst describing activity

What is hand over hand?
Place hand gently over patient’s and brush teeth together
How is distraction used when toothbrushing?
- place familiar object into patient’s hand whilst brushing
- other distraction such as music may also help
What is rescuing?
If attempts are failing then carer can leave and another member of staff can attempt to rescue
What sensory aids can be used to help brushing teeth?
- power suit
- desensitisation
- counting
- brush that relates to interest
- warm water
- stories or books
Define positive reinforcement.
Refers to an increase in the rate of behaviour as a result of the presentation of a preferred event.
Define negative reinforcement.
Refers to an increase in the rate of behaviour as a result of the withdrawal of a non-preferred event.
