4 - Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
1
Q
Mendels two laws
A
- Law of Segregation
- Law of Independent Assortment
2
Q
Law of Segregation
A
- Alleles account for variations in inherited characters
- For each character, an organism inherits two genes, one from each parent (diploid) and only passes one on (haploid gametes)
3
Q
Law of independent assortment
A
- Each particle equally likely to be transmitted when
gametes are formed - Emergence of one trait will not affect the likelihood of the emergence of another trait
4
Q
Advances in cell biology prompted by Mendel
A
- Cell theory
- Cell anatomy (mainly chr)
- Cell division (mitosis and meiosis)
5
Q
Linkage
A
- Traits on the same chromosome
- Do not always segregate together due to crossing over
- Reduces the rate of recombination but does not eliminate it completely (depends on distance between the two loci)
6
Q
ABO dominance
A
- A and B alleles dominant to O
- A and B co-dominant to one another (both expressed)
