4. Materials Flashcards
Explain Hooke’s Law and elastic limit
The extension is directly proportional to the force applied, given environmental conditions are kept constant within the limit of proportionality
What is tensile strain?
The extension over the original length
What is tensile stress?
The Force applied per unit cross sectional area
What is the limit of proportionality?
The point at which hooke’s law is no longer obeyed
What is the elastic limit?
The point at which when the load is removed the material won’t return to its original shape
What is elastic strain energy?
1/2FΔL
What is the breaking stress?
The force per unit cross sectional area where the material will begin to break
What is Young’s Modulus
Stress/ Strain
What is plastic behaviour?
Where the material experiences a large amount of extension as the load is increased
