3. Mechanics Flashcards
What is terminal velocity?
For an object in free fall, when the AR = Weight the object is moving at terminal velocity as the resultant force is 0.
What is newton’s first law of motion?
An object stays in motion or stationary when there’s no resultant force acting on it
What is Newton’s second law of motion?
F = m*a
or F = rate of change of momentum
What is Newton’s Third law of motion
For every force there’s an equal and opposite reaction force
What is the momentum equation?
Momentum = mass x velocity
What is impulse?
I = F x t = change of momentum
What is an elastic collision
When kinetic energy and momentum is conserved.
What is the principal of moments?
For an object to be in equilibrium, the sum of anticlockwise moments about a pivot is equal ot the sum of clockwise moments
What is the centre of mass of an object?q
The point at which the object’s mass acts downwards
What is inelastic collision
The momentum is conserved but the kinetic energy is not conserved
Power equation
Fv = rate of energy transfer
Principal of conservation of energy
Energy is always conserved, it cannot be created or destroyed only transferred
