4-Mains Elecricity & Electrical Appliances Flashcards
What is alternating current (a.c.)?
A current that changes direction or flow back and forth continuously. The number of complete cycles if reversal per second is the frequency.
What is a direct current (d.c.)?
A current that always flows in the same direction. Eg. Cells and batteries.
What is the frequency of UK mains electricity?
50 Hertz.
What is the voltage of UK mains supply?
230 volts.
How are most electrical appliances connected to the mains electricity supply?
Using a cable and three pin plug.
What colour is the earth wire?
Green and yellow.
What colour is the live wire?
Brown.
What colour is the neutral wire?
Blue.
Why are the inner cores of wires made of copper?
It’s a good conductor.
Why are the outside of wires made of flexible plastic?
It’s a good insulator.
Why are the pins of a plug made of brass?
It’s a good conductor.
What is the x-axis of an oscilloscope graph?
Time.
What is the y-axis of an oscilloscope graph?
Voltage.
How does a RCCB (residual current circuit breaker) work?
- Current becomes too high.
- RCCB trips switch.
- Circuit is broken.
- Cable or appliance is protected.
What does a RCCB do?
Detects the difference between live and neutral wires which shouldn’t be there.
