4. lesson Fishes Flashcards
What is the begining of the vertebrates
The first branch of the phylogeny is the fishes, which were the best adapting animals at their time. Due to probably few predators and because they had a vertebral column and a cranium. The first fish lived for 480 million years ago in shallow waters, called the Haikoulla.
Why is the vertebral column smart?
The vertebral column is smart because it allows us to move in a smart way. Mussels are connected to the column, which then pulls our body.
Why is the cranium smart?
First of all, it protects our sensory organs. Secondly, it made fishes able to develop jaws. We would think it was for biting, but in water it’s much smarter to suck in water to catch pray. Like a goldfish.
Terapodes
Mamals, amphibians, reptiles and birds
Gnathostomes
Vertebrates with jaws, which was the final evolution of the three steps we saw in class. The jaws made it able to hunt bigger prey.
Agnathans
Vertebrates without jaws, remember the fish. Lack bones and has a single nostril.
Prevertebrate
Suspension feeding animal with a mouth, which sucked in water an let it out through some slitts.
Agnathan
The earliest vertebrate which didn´t had any jaws, but used a muscular pump to catch food. This fish had panser.
Lamprey (agnathan group)
Lampreys live in salt water but have to bread in freshwater. It has no bones and a single nostril. No scales but a slimy surface. No paired fins.
They are scavengers, the garbagemen of the sea.
Hagfish (agnathan)
Lampreys live in salt water and are able to bread in salt water, which makes them very special. It has no bones and a single nostril. No scales but a slimy surface. No paired fins.
They are scavengers, the garbagemen of the sea.
