Why must washing occur prior to disinfection?
A
- prions and some proteins cannot be deactivated by heat
- heat would instead adhere these proteins to the surface of the instrument

What are the daily tests for an AWD?
A
- spray arms spin freely
- spray jets are not blocked
- no debris in the filter or parts of instruments or potential blockages
- check door seal and wipe clean
- check chemical levels
- record temperature of first cycle (automatic control test, ACT)

What are the loading requirements of an AWD?
A
- use the load carrier
- clip trays positioned correctly
- no overlapping equipment
- hinged instruments must be opened at the hinge
- any instruments with multiple parts should be disassembled

How is inspection carried out?
A
- after using the AWD all instruments should be inspected
- illuminated magnifier used to check for damage or remaining contamination

What happens if an instrument does not pass inspection due to contamination?
A
Either placed in ultrasonic bath or manually cleaned
