4. Forces Flashcards
What is the Centre of Gravity of an object
It is the point at which the whole weight of the objects may be considered to act
What is Hooke’s Law
It states that provided the proportionality limit is not exceeded, the extension f a bdy is proportinal to the applied load
What is the Moment of a Force
It is the turning effect of the force. It is equal to the product of the force and the perpendicular distance of the line of action of the force from the pivot
What is a Couple
It consists of two equal and opposite parallel forces whose line of ation do not ocincide. It tends to produce rotation only
What is the Torque of a Couple
It is the turning effectt of the couple. It is equal to the product of one of the forces and the perpendicular distance between the forces
What is the Principle of Moments
It states that for a system to remain in equilibrium, there is no resultant force about any point
Total clockwise moments=total anti-clockwise moments
What are the conditions for a system to be in equilibrium
- No resultant Force
- No resultant torque about any point
