3. Dynamics Flashcards
What is Newton’s First Law
It states that a body stays at rest or continues to move at a constant velocity unless resultant force acts on it
What is Inertia
The tendency of the body to tstay at rest or continue to move at constant velocity
What is Weight
It is the force experienced by a mass in a gravitational field
What is Newton’s Second Law
It states that the rate of change of momentum of a body is proportional to the resultant force acting on the body and takes place in the direction of the resultant force
What is Newton’s third Law
It states that if Body A exerts a force on B, then Body B will exert a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on Body A
What is Linear Momentum
The product of the mass of a body and its velocity
The direction of inear momentum is in the direction of the velocity
What is Impulse
The product of a force acting on a body and the time of impact
What is the Prinicple of Conservation of Linear Momentum
It states that the total momentum of a system remains constant provided no resultant external force act on the system
What is the difference between an elastic and an inelastic collision
An Elastic Collision is one in which the total kinetic energy remains the same, whereas an Inelastic Collison is one in which the total kinetic energy is not conserved
