What is the function of the FWC?
It processes failure conditions and aircraft systems data into visual and aural alerts, procedures and status messages.
What warnings are not processed by the FWC?
- stall warnings
- GPWS warnings
- windshear warnings
What visual alerts are presented?
- Master Warning Lights (MWL)
- Master Caution Lights (MCL)
- Auto-land Caution Lights
- Local Lights
- Multi Function Display System (MFDS)
- Engine alerts - light in appropriate fuel lever
- Engine Fire - light in fire handle
How are aural alerts presented and what can they be?
- presented via flight deck speakers and headsets
1. cavalry charge = auto pilot disconnect
2. whooler = trim
3. clacker = overspeed warning
4. C chord = altitude alert
5. Buzzer = cabin call
What is the function of the SAP?
automatic backup in case FWC fails completely
SAP comes on automatically
Define level 3 alert?
- Requires immediate corrective or compensatory action
- Repetetive triple chime
- Master Warning Light (MWL)
- MFDU Alert Message in red
Define level 2 alert?
- requires immediate awarenes and subsequent corrective or compensatory action
- double chime
- 2 flashing amber Master Caution Lights (MCL)
- local amber light
- MFDU alert message in amber
Define level 1 alert?
- requires pilot awareness
- single chime
- MFDU alert message in amber
- and/or local light
How are visual alerts on the MFDU cancelled?
- fault is corrected
- relevent Master Light is pressed
Which level 3 annunciations are not cancelled in the normal way?
- Landing Gear not Down (flap 23 or more)
- Take off config alerts
These alerts cannot be cancelled until the condition is corrected.
What is the function of the AUTO LAND caution lights?
alert regarding failures during and involving automatic landings
When are local lights cancelled?
- when the fault is corrected
- affected push button is pressed
Which lights can be dimmed by the brightness selector?
- Master Warning Light
- Master Caution Light
- Auto Land caution lights
on which display units is FWC information presented?
Multi Function Display Units (2 x MFDU’s)
Left MFDU = Primary engine instruments, Alerts, Memos (blue)
Right MFDU = Secondary engine parameters, procedures, status messages, APU
What happens automatically if a display unit fails?
Left DU fails = primary page displayed automatically on Right DU
Secondary Page can be displayed by pressing the transfer button.
However, the secondary Page cannot be displayed if an alert concerning a primary engine parameter is displayed
In what priority and colour are alert messages presented?
- Alerts presented in order of descending priority (up to 11 alerts)
- Level 3 alerts in red
- Level 2 and level 1 alerts in amber
What indication is there that there are more than 11 messages and how do you handle this situation?
- indicated by “page 1” on MFDU
- CANCEL button removes presented amber messages to display page 2
- Red Alert messages cannot be removed
- RECALL button restores messages in order of descending priority
What colour are memo messages and when can they be displayed?
- Blue
- presented when the number of alert messages leaves space available
Where are procedures presented and when?
- Automatically presented on the secondary page
- Maximum 2 procedures can be displayed if space is available
When and where are STATUS messages displayed?
- display on the STATUS page on the RH MFDU.
- indicate failed or switched off systems.
- displayed automatically at engine shutdown or when the park brake is on, or when the STATUS page is manually selected
What indication is there that STATUS messages are present?
white STS at bottom RH corner of left MFDU
Is the FWC operative in battery power only situation?
No
What can the SAP provide?
- main Red and Amber annunciator lights
- two aural alerts (cavalry charge and clacker)
When can you do a FWS test and what does it consist of?
- on the ground only
- Alert light filament test + automatic backup test
- completion indicated by a single chime and a green COMPL light
