4. Dynamics processing Flashcards
1
Q
situations where you would you use a compressor
A
- to level dynamic range, - add more punch, - balance a sound
2
Q
situations where you would use a limiter
A
- to prevent any accidental peaks, - to maximize volume in mastering
3
Q
situations where you would use a gate
A
- reduce background noise, - for creative effects (e.g gated reverb)
4
Q
explain a compressor’s parameters
A
Threshold – sets the level at which the compressor kicks in
Ratio – the amount of reduction
Make-up gain – allows to boost the signal from the bottom
Attack and release – the compressors envelope
5
Q
explain a gate’s parameters
A
Threshold - how much the gate opens to allow sound to pass through.
Attack - how long it takes for the gate to transition from closed to open.
Hold - enables the gate to remain open when the signal level has dropped below the threshold.
Release or decay - how long it takes for the gate to open.
