What was used before voice mail?
Answer machines. Small audio tape that would play a message if the tape went unanswered. The caller could then leave a message.
What can voice mail do?
Delete or store multiple messages, forward the messages to another voice mail inbox and have different messages depending on whether the pone is engaged, not answered, etc.
What are menus on phones?
Where the user dials a certain button to be taken to another option.
What is ringback?
If someone is making a call and the recipient is engaged, by enabling ringback - when the recipient gets off the phone, they will be dialled again.
Give 6 features of telephone systems.
Voice mail, menus, ringback, videophone, caller display and conference call.
What does ATM stand for?
Automated teller machines
How does an ATM work?
The customer enters their cash card in, it checks to ensure that the card hasn’t been reported lost or stolen. It reads the sort code and account number on the magnetic strip on the card. The ATM will then request the customers bank record from the main database across communication links and check that the PIN they enter is correct.
What happens if the customer uses an ATM in another country?
Cash is withdrawn in the currency of that country.
What does EFTPOS stand for?
Electronic Funds Transfer at the Point of Sale
What does EFTPOS mean?
The goods or services can be purchased using a credit or debit card and the funds are transferred from the buyers account to the vendors account electronically.
What does a debit card do?
Lets the user transfer money from their account to the vendors amount. If there is not enough money in the users account, the transaction is cancelled.
What does a credit card do?
Lets the user transfer money from their account to the vendors amount. If there is not enough money in the users account, the user is given a temporary loan by the credit card company, which they pay back at the end of the month. There is a limit on the amount of money able to be borrowed.
What is at the bottom of a cheque?
Magnetic ink characters - the cheque number, sort code and account number. This identifies the cheque.
What do sort code and account numbers do?
A sort code identifies the bank and branch. An account number identifies the account within that branch.
What are the 4 stages of the automated clearing process of a cheque?
- Using optical character recognition to read the amount of the cheque. 2. Using magnetic ink character recognition to read the information at the bottom. 3. Group the cheques by their originating bank. 4. Recording the transaction.
