4 Flashcards
Forms a closed circuit of tubes that carry blood throughout the body?
Blood vessels
Types of Blood Vessels?
- capillaries
- arteries
- veins
Arteries?
o Large vessels
o Carry blood from heart to tissues of body.
o Carry oxygenated blood, except pulmonary arteries.
o Thick walls-need to withstand pressure produced when heart pushes blood into them
Capillaries?
o Smallest blood vessels
o Connect arteries to veins
o Bring oxygen and nutrients(glucose) to cells and removes CO2, and other wastes from cells.
o Only one cell thick (epithelial cell)
Veins
o Transport blood away from capillaries& carry it toward heart. o Have valves
o carry deoxygenated blood except pulmonary veins.
o Thinner vessel walls with less smooth muscles than arteries
Layers in the veins and arteries?
- Tunica adventitia: Outermost layer made up of connective tissue fibers to make the wall of the vessels tighter so that it will not burst under pressure.
- Tunica media: Middle layer made up of smooth muscle tissue and a thin layer of elastic fibrous tissue.
- Tunica intima: Is the inner layer and made up of a single layer of squamous epithelial cells.(endothelium)
Capillary wall is composed only of one layer……..
the tunica intima or endothelium
The force of blood on the wall of the arteries is known as?
blood pressure
What is defined as the maximum pressure in the arteries exerted during
ventricular contraction?
Systolic pressure
What is the minimum pressure exerted when ventricles relax and fill
Diastolic pressure
What’s the normal B.P.
120/80
