4-6-6 The Human Genome Project Flashcards
1
Q
Genome - definition
A
The entire set of genes carried by an organism.
2
Q
What are the objectives of the Human Genome Project?
A
- To identify and locate the then estimated 50,000 - 100,000 human genes on all chromosomes. (The number of genes in humans turned out to be closer to 24,000).
- To determine the sequence of the three billion base pairs in the human genome.
3
Q
When was the Human Genome Project Completed?
A
A rough draft of the genome was completed ~2,000 (January 2001). The Project was considered officially complete in April 2003.
4
Q
How many genes in the human genome are known to be associated with genetic disorders?
A
About 4,000 genes.
5
Q
Why is identifying the disease genes in the human genome important?
A
Knowing where the gene is located, as well as the nature and action of the protein it codes for, will prompt development of new treatments for that disease.
