3e. Nebulizers cont. Flashcards
How does a Ultrasonic Nebulizer work?
It uses Piezoelectric crystal to convert electric energy into high frequency vibrations to produce aerosol
Ultrasonic Nebulizer: What’s the relationship between Amplitude and Aerosol Output?
Directly proportional
For greater aerosol output, increase the amplitude
Ultrasonic Nebulizer: What’s the relationship between Particle Size and Frequency?
Inversely proportional
For smaller particles, turn up frequency
Ultrasonic Nebulizer: What’s an advantage and a disadvantage?
Advantage: It’s capable for higher aerosol output (0.2-1.0 mL/min) and higher aerosol densities
Disadvantage: Denatures medication because it heats it up
Large Ultrasonic Nebulizer: What’s the use?
Used for delivery of bland aerosol therapy or sputum induction
What makes Large Ultrasonic Nebulizers different?
It incorporates air blowers to carry mist to patients.
Temperature of solution increases during use
Large Ultrasonic Nebulizer: What is Low Flow associated with?
Low flow through nebulizer is associated with smaller particles and higher mist density
Small Ultrasonic Nebulizer: What’s the use?
Used to deliver aerosolized medications
What makes Small Ultrasonic Nebulizers different?
Uses patient’s inspiratory flow aerosol from nebulizer into lung
Vibrating Mesh: What are the two types?
Active and Passive
Active Vibrating Mesh: What’s a brand and what is it?
Aerogen
It uses a dome shaped aperture plate that has 1000 funnel shaped apertures connected to a piezoceramic element surround the plate.
Active Vibrating Mesh: How does it work?
The electrical energy applied to the piezoceramic element vibrates the apertures and moving it up and down approx 1um to create a micropump
Passive Vibrating Mesh: What’s a brand and how does it work?
NEU-22 (Omron) and I-Neb (Respironics)
Uses a mesh separated from USN horn by liquid to be a Nebulizer
Passive Vibrating Mesh: What’s the Residual Drug Volume (dead volume) range?
0.1-0.4 mL
