2b. Oxygen Therapy CPG Flashcards
What is Oxygen Therapy?
When you administer oxygen at concentrations greater than in ambient air to provide symptomatic relief or treatment for the patient.
Name the 5 Indications for Oxygen Therapy
- Documented Hypoxemia
- Acute care situation where hypoxemia is suspected
- Severe Trauma
- Acute MI
- Short term therapy or surgical intervention (post anesthesia recovery)
What are contraindications for Oxygen Therapy?
There’s no contraindications
What are 5 Precautions/Possible Complications to Oxygen Therapy?
Fire Hazard Oxygen Toxicity Retinopathy of Prematurity Absorption Atelectasis Depression of Ventilation
What do Low Flow systems do?
They deliver 100% oxygen at flows that are less than the patient’s inspiratory flow rate
What do High flow systems do?
They deliver a prescribed gas mixture to exceed patient’s inspiratory demand
How do you monitor patient during oxygen therapy?
Clinical assessment and measuring PaO2 or SpO2.
Should be monitored at the:
-Initiation of therapy
-Within 12 hrs of start of therapy (FiO2 <0.4)
-Within 8 hours of start of therapy (FiO2 >0.4)
-Within 72 hours of an MI
- Within 2 hours of a diagnosis of COPD
What’s the frequency of giving oxygen therapy?
Should be administered continuously unless the need has been shown to be associated only with specific situations like exercise and sleep
