Describe the Regimental “Bug.”

A

A green enameled metal device 1 1/16th inches in width consisting of a golden trumpet, mouthpiece up, entwined vertically with a cord, surmounting a green enamel scroll arced on the left and the right and looped below the trumpet. Inscribed in the scroll of the viewer’s left is “Brave” and on the right “Rifles.” Inscribed centered and underneath the trumpet is the numeral “3”

A

The green scroll represents the green facings on the old uniforms. The trumpet was the authorized unit insignia for the regiment. The numeral 3 indicates the third mounted unit in the Army.

A

The Regiment’s original green facings on the uniform and its golden trumpet insignia are captured in the design of the shield and unit crest. The Mexican War campaign is shown by the cross for Vera Cruz and the tower in green (Mexico’s Color) for fortified Mexico City. The chief commemorates the Regiment’s World War 1 service, was taken from the arms of Lorraine.
