What is an environment?
The surroundings or conditions in which an organism lives
What does biotic mean, with examples?
A factor that makes up a part of an organism’s living environment
- competition
- predation
What does abiotic mean, with examples?
A factor that makes up part of an organism’s non-biological/living environment
- pH
- temperature
- rainfall
What does biosphere mean?
The regions of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere that supports life/is occupied by living organisms
What is an ecosystem?
A dynamic system involving the interactions between all the living and non-living components of a particular area
What is a population?
A group of individuals of the same species that occupy the same habitat at the same time and are able to interbreed
What is a community?
All the populations of different species living and interacting in a particular place at the same time
What is a habitat?
The place where an organism normally lives and is characterised by the physical conditions and other types of organisms that are present
There are many habitats in an ecosystem
What is a niche?
Describes how an organism fits into an environment, referring to where the organisms lives and what its role is there
