3.6.1.3 - Simple Harmonic Systems Flashcards
When is kinetic energy max?
At equilibrium
When is GPE max?
At the points of max amplitude
Ep=
1/2 kx^2
Ek=
1/2 k(A^2 - x^2)
Et =
1/2 kA
For a mass spring system what is a = to?
-kx/ m
What does damping cause?
Damping forces cause the amplitude of oscillations to decrease with time.
What happens to the time period as the amplitude decreases due to damping?
Time period stays constant.
What is heavy damping?
The amplitude of oscillation struggles to return to equilibrium. No oscillating motion occurs.
What is critical damping?
The amplitude of the oscillation decreases to zero in the shortest possible time and does not overshoot the equilibrium position.
What does lightly damped mean?
Amplitude decreases by the same fraction each time.
