Define system software.
Software needed to run the computers hardware and application programs.
Define application programs.
This can be defined as general purpose, special purpose of custom-written (bespoke) software.
Define general purpose.
Software that can be used for many different purposes.
E.g. Word processer, spreadsheet or graphic packages.
Define special purpose.
Software that performs a specific set of tasks e.g. fingerprint scanning systems or payroll.
Define bespoke.
Written for a specific tasks.
E.g. NHS patient database system.
Why does bespoke software exist?
There may not be any software to do the job or the client wants it to be tailored exactly to their needs.

Operating system.

Library programs.
