3.5 Flashcards
Kinetic molecular theory how particles move
particles are in continue motion
the collisions between particles have constant velocity and direction
after coalition particles have new velocity and direction
they have elastic collisions
avg. kinetic energy equation
KE=1/2 mv^2
KE=1/2Mv^2 = 1/2 mV^2
movement of particles based on mass
lighter particles move faster
heavier particles move slower
Does Molecular Size Matter?
a larger volume particle will collied with other particles and the wall more often as the gas is compressed and the spacing between each particle is less
kinetic molecular theory
summarieszes the ideal behavior of gases
particles have random and continue motion
collistions are perfectly elastic
particles have negligible volume
constant temperature = constant avg. kinetic energy
particle speed
individual particle speed is always changing
at room temp , particle speed ranges from 0-1500m/s
w larger number of particle the distribution of the speed remains consistent despite individual fluctuations
comparing temperatures
as temperatura increase the speed of the particles increases and less particles have low speed
the area under the curve stays the same so the curve stretches to maintain the same area through the graph
comparing gas masses
gases with different masses at the same temperature have diffrent avg. speed
more massive the gases the slower the particle moves so the curve of the graph is steeper
