3.4 Microbiology Flashcards
What are the 4 classification methods for bacteria?
Size and shape, Gram stain, Metabolic reaction (mode of nutrition), Antigenic and genetic features.
What are 2 mode of nutrition for bacteria?
Heterotopic and autotrophic
What is the correct name for sphere shaped bacteria?
Cocci
What is the correct name for rod shaped bacteria?
Bacilli
What is the correct name for spiral shaped bacteria?
Spirilum
What colour is a positive gram stain?
Violet
What colour is a negative gram stain?
Red
Why does gram positive bacteria go purple?
They have thicker peptidoglycan layers and no outer lipopolysaccharide layer allowing the violet complex to be retained
Why does gram negative bacteria go red?
They have a thinner peptidoglycan layer and an outer lipopolysaccharide layer. They do not retain the violet complex but do retain the red counterstain
How thick is the cell wall of gram negative bacteria?
8-12 nm
How thick is the cell wall of gram positive bacteria?
20-30 nm
Which gram stain is resistant to penicillin and lysozyme?
Gram negative bacteria
What 5 conditions are necessary for bacteria growth in a lab?
Suitable temperature and pH, nutrition, water, optimal oxygen conditions met
What is an obligate aerobe?
Bacteria that grows in the presence of oxygen
What is an obligate anaerobe?
Bacteria that grows in the absence of oxygen
