3.3d Flashcards
What is the most economically viable alternative to oil?
Offshore wind
What does NIMBY stand for?
Not In My Back Yard i.e. Wind power is great as long as I can’t see the ugly things.
What do you have to pay more of if your car is less ‘green’?
Car tax
What could go in your loft that would make your house more green and reduce fuel bills?
Insulation
What does Iceland rely on?
Geothermal energy
What fuel is continuous?
Nuclear
What ‘fuel’ involves dams and reservoirs?
Hydro-electric
Explain the basics of geothermal energy production.
Pump water into the ground where it is naturally hot (e.g. near a volcanic area) where it is heated, creates steam and turns a turbine.
Explain Carbon Capture.
Carbon capture is the process of capturing waste CO2 from large sources like fossil fuel power plants, transporting it through pipelines, and depositing it underground. This prevents large amounts of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, mitigating the contribution of fossil fuels to global warming.
Give an advantage of lithium-ion batteries.
- lighter than other types of rechargeable batteries
- very high energy density
- low maintenance
- variety of types available
Give three advantages of solar power.
- Renewable source of energy
- Sunlight will not run out for a large number of years
- Relatively cheap to install in housing
- You can sell electricity pack to the grid
- Get paid for electricity
- Saves 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide
- Low maintenance (only an initial cost)
- Use in remote locations
Give two advantages of biofuels.
- They are cheaper and easier to source than crude oil.
- It is a form of renewable energy.
- They have low greenhouse gas emissions.
- They are economically secure.
- They can be produced in most countries so there is less dependency on foreign oil.
- They produce much lower levels of pollution than many other sources of energy.
- It has more jobs than many other renewable energy industries.
Give the main four energy supply methods where nimbyism is a problem.
Wind, solar, fracking and nuclear.
Why would Kenya be so great for solar energy?
It is on the equator so has more hours of sunlight (energy producing hours) than many other places in the world.
Do lithium-ion batteries have a high energy density?
Yes
