33-Sexual Selection Flashcards
What is sexual selection?
A form of natural selection in which the selection pressure is based on mating success and mate quality.
How do males and females differ?
Male: Intrasexual component (rivalry). Belligerence to other males, salesmanship to females, relatively unselective of females.
Female: Intersexual component (preference). Resists salesmanship and are highly selective of males.
How important is sexual selection for fitness of individuals?
Fitness is survivorship, fecundity, and mating success. All of these components are driven by sexual selection.
What is sex role reversal?
Females are larger and more aggressive than males so they defend territories and attract males. All parental care is performed by males. Newts females have more mates. Pipefishs males have a high parental investment.
Why do female jacanas commit infanticide?
When the female leaves the territory that they are defending, nearby females will attach chicks and have babies with the original females male.
