The Fifth Monarchists
They wanted a regime run exclusively by the ‘saints’ based on their interpretation of the biblical books. Beliefs derived from millenarianism.
April 1648
As the army prepared to face a second civil war and a Scottish invasion the army met in prayer at Windsor Castle. A leading Fifth Monarchist, Major-General Thomas Harrison declared Charles I ‘that man of blood’.
Fifth Monarchists and the Rump
Increasingly regarded the Rump as preventing the establishment of godly rule. Became a pressure group that aimed at removing the Rump and establishing godly rule, at the forefront was Harrison.
Thomas Harrison
Harrison was a prominent regicide. The most prominent Fifth Monarchist, Harrison was at the forefront of calls to remove the Rump. He refused to accept Cromwell’s Protectorate and was imprisoned 4 times.
