Q

Contrast urbanisation and counter-urbanisation (consider movement, location, time period- when
it happened, wealth and qualifications of person)

A

Urbanisation is the increase in the proportion of the population living in built-up urban areas. Whereas, counter urbanisation is the movement of people away from large urban areas to smaller settlements and rural areas. Urbanisation occurred from 1760 to 1850, unlike counter-urbanisation, which occurred from the 1970’s to the 1980’s.

Q

What is suburbanisation and why did it happen?

A

Suburbanisation, which is the movement of people from te middle of the city to the edges- urban areas expand rapidly as housing is built in the outskirts, happens due to too much pollution and overcrowding of people with little “natural” space. Suburban areas offer more open green spaces and is a bit more family-friendly. Also, the improvements in transport networks, mean that people can love in the suburbs and commute in to the city to work.

Q

Describe accessibility and how it affects land use.

A

City centres are usually very accessible- they’re the location of the main train and bus stations and the centre of the road network. Shops and offices are located in the city centre because they need to be accessible to lots of people. Some businesses now located on the edges of cities, which are near MAJOR MOTORWAY JUNCTIONS and OUT-OF-TOWN AIRPORTS, to avoid traffic congestion in the city centre.
