3.3 City Change Flashcards
What happened to the UK when urbanisation occurred? Roughly when did it occur?
In most places is linked to intdustrilisation. The industrial revolution and better transport attracted workers to towns as the cities grew, more factories were built as the population grew.
What happened to the UK when suburbanisation occurred? Roughly when did it occur?
When developed cities become too crowded and polluted, people who can afford it move out of the city centre to the new “suburbs”. Often on the edge of cities where the land is cheaper and the air is cleaner.
What happened to the UK when de-industrialisation occurred? Roughly when did it occur?

What happened to the UK when regeneration occurred? Roughly when did it occur?
D
What happened to the UK when counter-urbanisation occurred? Roughly when did it occur?
People choose to leave larger towns and cities and move to rural areas. This leads to population decline in inner city areas.
Increasing car ownership and improvements in IT mean people can work from home.
What happened to the UK when urbanisation occurred? Roughly when did it occur?
Due to the industrial revolution and better transport, many workers were attracted to towns as the cities grew, more factories were built as the population grew.
Contrast urbanisation and counter-urbanisation (consider movement, location, time period- when
it happened, wealth and qualifications of person)
Urbanisation is the increase in the proportion of the population living in built-up urban areas. Whereas, counter urbanisation is the movement of people away from large urban areas to smaller settlements and rural areas. Urbanisation occurred from 1760 to 1850, unlike counter-urbanisation, which occurred from the 1970’s to the 1980’s.
What is suburbanisation and why did it happen?
Suburbanisation, which is the movement of people from te middle of the city to the edges- urban areas expand rapidly as housing is built in the outskirts, happens due to too much pollution and overcrowding of people with little “natural” space. Suburban areas offer more open green spaces and is a bit more family-friendly. Also, the improvements in transport networks, mean that people can love in the suburbs and commute in to the city to work.
