3.3 - Cities Change Over Time and City Land Use Flashcards
Contrast Urbanisation and Counter-Urbanisation (consider movement, location, time period - when it happened, wealth and qualifications of person)
Urbanisation is moving to a city (usually from rural areas) to the city centre. People who move to the city will generally be looking for work and won’t have many qualifications. They may go into the the secondary sector. Counter-urbanisation is when people move out of the city. Usually this will be wealth people moving to the suburbs.
What is suburbanisation and why did it happen?
Suburbanisation is when people move out to the suburbs for a better life. It happened because, after the secondary jobs stopped, people no longer needed to live near to their work and in cramped houses so they move out to bigger houses to start families.
How did suburbanisation affect where people lived?
It affected where people lived as people moved from the inner city where they may work/used to work and move to the suburbs. One of the reasons this is possible is because of better transport links so people can travel in more easily.
What is re-urbanisation and why does it happen?
Re-urbanisation is where people move back to the city after moving out. It can happen for many reasons such as improvements in jobs in the city.
