3.3-3.4 Flashcards
What do Carbohydrates provide?
Carbohydrates provide us with the fuel that makes all of the other reactions of life possible
What are Carbhydrates made up of?
Some carbohydrates contain only one sugar unit.
What is the equation for Glucose?
C6H12O6
What are Complex Carbohydrates?
Complex carbohydrates such as starch and cellulose are made up of long chains of simple units together.
What are Lipids?
Lipids are fats and oils.
Why are lipids important?
Lipids are very important in your cell me,branes as hormones and in your nervous system.
What are lipids made up of?
Lipids are made up of three molecules of fatty acids joined to a molecule of glycerol.
What are Proteins used for?
Proteins are used for building up the cells and tissues of your body as well as the basis of all your enzymes.
What are Proteins made up of?
A protein molecule is made up of long chains of small units called amino acids.
What do proteins carry out?
- Structural components of tissues such as muscles and tendoms
- Hormones such as insulin
- Antibodies which destroy pathogens
What is a catalysts?
A catalyst speeds up a chemical reaction but is not used up in the reaction. You can use it over and over again.
What are Enzymes made up of?
Enzymes are large protein molecules
What is Metabolism?
The sum of all the reactions in cell or in the body
