3.2.2 All cells arise from other cells Flashcards
Mitosis is part of the cell in which?
Eukaryotic cells divide to produce 2 daughter cells each with identical copies of DNA produced by the parent cell during DNA replication
What is the Cell cycle?
Cycles of division with intermediate growth periods
Outline the stages of the Cell cycle
- Interphase
- Mitosis/Meiosis
- Cytokinesis
Explain why the cell cycle dosen’t occur in some cells
After differentiation some types of cells in multicellular organisms no longer have the ability to divide
What is the difference between the Cell cycle and Mitosis?
Cell cycle: cycles of divisions with growth periods in between
Mitosis: only a small percentage of the cell cycle and refers to only nuclear division
Outline what happens during Interphase
G1: cell synthesises proteins for replication e.g. tubilin for spindle fibres and the cell size doubles
S: DNA replication , chromosomes consist of 2 sister chromatids joined at a centromere
G2: organelles divide
State the purpose of Mitosis
To produce 2 genetically identical daughter cells for:
- Growth
- Cell replacement and tissue repair
- Asexual reproduction
Name the stages of Mitosis
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
Outline what happens during Prophase
