3.2.1.1 Sources of Wisdom and Authority - Bible Flashcards
Why is the Bible important to Christians?
The Bible is the foundation of faith and without there would be no morals or help in time of need.
What is the Protestant view on the Bible’s authority?
Orthodox Protestants believe in the need for ‘sola scriptura’ or scripture alone because they believe it is word-for-word the Word of God.
Give two pieces of evidence as to why Protestants believe in Sola Scriptura.
“All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching.” (2 Timothy 3:16)
““Do not go beyond what is written.” (1 Corinthians 4:6)
What is the Catholic view on the Bible’s authority?
Catholics reject sola scriptura and teach that both the Bible and sacred Roman Catholic tradition are equally binding.
What does Tradition mean for Catholics?
The teachings that the apostles passed on orally through their preaching, they mostly overlap with those contained in scripture.
Give two pieces of evidence as to why Catholics use both Scripture and Tradition.
“Stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us.” (2 Thess. 2:15)
“Sacred tradition hands on its full purity God’s word” Dei Verbum (in regards to scripture)
