Q

What is the structure of the nucleus?

What is it made up of?

A
  • nuclear envelope
  • —–> double membrane surrounding the nucleus
  • —–> controls entry and exit of materials into the nucleus
  • nuclear pores
  • —–> allows the passage of large molecules, such as messenger RNA
  • nuceloplasm
  • —–> jelly like, makes up most of the nucleus
  • nucleolus
  • —–> small spherical region
  • —–> manufractures ribosomal RNA and ribosomes

Q

What are the functions of the Nucleus?

A
  • act as a control center of the cell through production of mRNA and tRNA
  • retain genetic material of the cell in form of DNA and chromosomes
  • manufacture RNA and ribosomes

Q

Describe the structure of a mitochondrion?

A
  • made up of a double membrane forming cristae
  • cristae are extensions of the inner membrane
  • cristae provide a large surface area for the attachment of enzymes and proteins involved in respiration
  • matrix makes up the remainder
  • contains protein, lipids, ribosomes and dna that allows the cell to produce some of their own proteins
