3.2.1.1 Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of the nucleus?
What is it made up of?
A
- nuclear envelope
- —–> double membrane surrounding the nucleus
- —–> controls entry and exit of materials into the nucleus
- nuclear pores
- —–> allows the passage of large molecules, such as messenger RNA
- nuceloplasm
- —–> jelly like, makes up most of the nucleus
- nucleolus
- —–> small spherical region
- —–> manufractures ribosomal RNA and ribosomes
2
Q
What are the functions of the Nucleus?
A
- act as a control center of the cell through production of mRNA and tRNA
- retain genetic material of the cell in form of DNA and chromosomes
- manufacture RNA and ribosomes
3
Q
Describe the structure of a mitochondrion?
A
- made up of a double membrane forming cristae
- cristae are extensions of the inner membrane
- cristae provide a large surface area for the attachment of enzymes and proteins involved in respiration
- matrix makes up the remainder
- contains protein, lipids, ribosomes and dna that allows the cell to produce some of their own proteins
4
Q
Function of mitochondria?
A
To produce the energy carrier molecule, ATP
