Autocratic (authoritarian)
Leader makes decision without consultation.
-close supervision of staff
-minimal delegation (employees have NO power)
-suitable for unskilled/demotivated workers
-suitable in times of crisis/when quick decisions have to be made
Democratic
Leader consults the team but makes the final decision themselves.
-leader delegates authority and encourages participation.
-subordinates have more power over their own working lives
-suitable in businesses where workers are skilled and self motivated
Laissez-Faire (to leave alone)
Leader allows team to make decision.
-suitable for businesses with highly skilled, creative and self-motivated workers.
-workforce understands and agrees with organisations objectives.
Paternalistic
Leader acts in ‘fatherly’ way towards workforce.
-making decisions based on the needs of the workforce as well as the business.
Style versatility
Leaders can adopt ANY of the leadership styles depending on the context.
