3.2 - Virtualisation Flashcards
What is server virtualization?
One physical server runs multiple virtual servers.
What is client virtualization?
A virtual client (virtual machine) has full desktop functionality but processing and storage are done via a hypervisor.
What does a user see in client virtualization?
The ‘dumb’ part.
Why should an organization use virtualization?
Software distribution becomes simple because applications can be accessed from within the data center.
What is meant by the term virtual client?
It’s a full desktop environment where the processing happens remotely.
What is one limitation of using virtual clients?
Increased server load can cause poor performance for all customers.
What is another limitation of using virtual clients?
Expertise needed to install the client, which requires training.
What is storage virtualization?
Data being stored across multiple physical devices but presented as fewer.
What is cloud virtualization?
Data is held and processed in an off-site location.
What is hybrid virtualization?
Using both a mix of public (owned by 3rd party) or private (company owns remote location) cloud services.
What are the benefits of virtualization?
The hardware can be used efficiently, increased productivity, reduced long-term costs, reduced power consumption, and improved scalability.
What is a limitation of virtualization?
More complex because there’s a disconnect from reality and what is being shown to the user.
What is another limitation of virtualization?
May need specialist staff to set up, which can be expensive.
What happens if the hypervisor/host machine goes down?
All users are affected.
What can cause performance issues in virtualization?
High server load on CPU.
