3.2 Virtualisation Flashcards
Virtualisation
It describes the creation of a virtual version of a device, software or server
Server
Allows one physical server to host multiple virtual machines each running separately
Server strengths
Cost reduction
Backup and recovery is reliable and efficient
Server Weaknesses
Security risks
Some applications cant be virtualised
Client
A virtual machine environment in the users machine
Client Strengths
Increased security and functionality
Client Weaknesses
Not always practical or cost effective
Storage
Combines multiple storage devices so that they appear to be one device
Storage Strength
Cost and time saving
Storage weaknesses
Lacks scalability and fast access ability
Cloud
Hardware virtualisation that creates virtual machines in the operating system
Cloud strengths
Uses hardware efficiently and recovery is easy
Cloud weaknesses
High initial investment and data is at risk
Hybrid
A model of client computing where virtualised applications and desktops are deployed using a combination of cloud based and on site infrastructure.
Hybrid strengths
Minimises cost changes for organisations and eliminates many capital expenses
