3.2 Structure of eukaryotic, prokaryotic cells and viruses Flashcards
What are the 5 key structures within the nucleus ?
1- Nuclear envelope
2- Nuclear pore
3- Nucleoplasm
4- Chromosomes
5- Nucleolus
What is the structure and function of the nucleolus ?
Small sphere inside the nucleus which is the rRNA production and makes ribosomes
What is the function of the RER ?
Protein synthesis
What is the function of the SER ?
Synthesis and stores lipids and carbohydrates
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus ?
- Add carbohydrates to proteins to form glycoproteins
- Transport, modify and store lipids
- Secrete carbohydrates
What are lysosomes and what are their function ?
They are bags of digestive enzymes. Their function is hydrolyse phagocytosis cells
What is the function of mitochondria ?
- Site of aerobic respiration
- Site of ATP production
What is the function of ribosomes ?
Site of protein synthesis
What Is the function of the vacuole ?
Makes cells turgid and therefore provides support
What is the function of chloroplasts ?
They are the site of respiration
What is the cell wall made of in plants ?
Cellulose
What is the cell wall made of in fungi ?
Chitin
