Q

What happens during prophase ?

A
  • Nucleur membrane breaks down
  • Chromatin condenses into chromosomes and become visible
  • Centrioles move to opposite poles of the cell and spindle fibres become visible .

Q

What happens during metaphase ?

A
  • Chromosomes align along the centre of the cell
  • Spindle fibres released attach to the centromere and chromatids

Q

What happens during anaphase ?

A
  • Spindle fibres retract and pull centromeres and chromatids that they are bound to to opposite sides/poles of the cell

Q

What happens during telophase ?

A
  • Chromosomes become longer and thinner so are not visible
  • Spindle fibres disintegrate
  • Nucleus starts to reform

Q

How do prokaryotic cells divide ?

A

By binary fission

17
Q

Outline the process of binary fission

A

1- Replication of circular DNA and plasmids
2- Division of the cytoplasm to create two daughter cells

18
Q

What are the 3 stages of Interphase and what happens during each ?

A
  • G1 = Growth
  • S = DNA synthesis
  • G2 = Growth and preparation for mitosis
19
Q

What is the longest stage of the cell cycle ?

A

Interphase as this is when the organelles double and DNA replicates

20
Q

What are the 3 stages of the cell cycle ?

A
  • Interphase
  • Cell division (Mitosis and Meiosis)
  • Cytokinesis
21
Q

What is cytokinesis ?

A

The division of the cytoplasm to create new cells

22
Q

Can viruses undergo cell division ?

A

No, as they are non living

23
Q

How do viruses replicate ?

A

They inject their nucleic acid into a host cell and they replicate the virus particles
