3.2 - Forces In Action Flashcards
What is a Resultant Force?
A single force which has the same effect as the sum of all the forces acting on a body
What is one Newton?
The force that causes a mass of one kilogram to have an acceleration of one metre per second squared
What is the Moment Force?
The product of a force and the perpendicular distance of its line of action from the point or axis
What is the Principle of Moments?
It states that for an object to be in rotational equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments must equal the sum of the anti clockwise moments
What is a Turning Moment of Torque?
The product of one of the forces in a couple and the perpendicular distance between them
What is a Couple?
Two equal and antiparallel forces that act to produce a rotation
What is the Centre of Mass of an object?
The single point at which all of the mass of the object can be assumed to be situated
What is Archimedes’ Principle?
It states that the upward buoyant force extremes on an object immersed in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid that the object displaces
