What does the term deadlock mean?
Stalemate
List 3 methods soldiers used to dig in and protect their trenches
1) Barbed wire and sandbags

3) They will fit at high ground to prevent flooding and to also have an aerial advantage
Why did generals of both sides struggle to break the stalemate of trench warfare?
New type of warfare which generals were not experienced in. Hard to kill people since usually hidden and out of sight of guns.
What about Flanders made it an area in which it was particularly difficult to break the deadlock?
The weather was really bad in those fields with lots of rain, leading to huge amounts of mud and flooding.

The space between two opposition trenches which no nation had claimed

Communication trenches were the connection between the multiple layers of trenches. It was used for transportation of men, food and equipment

Postcards sent to the front line from back home or vice versa.
