3.2 Flashcards
What is an Ion?
An Ion is an electrically charged atom.
it has gained or lost one or more electrons, and now has a charge.
What is an Ionic Compound?
A compound that made by the bonding of a metal and non-metal
What are some characteristics of Ionic compounds?
- they form ions in solutions
- they are all solids at room temperature
- they have high melting and boiling points
- they conduct electricity
What is the Chemical name for CaO?
Calcium Oxide
What is the chemical name for Mg2N
Magnesium Nitride
* magnesium doesn’t have a prefix because it is an ionic compound. Metals aren’t given a prefix, and Magnesium is a metal, so it doesn’t have a prefix.
What is the chemical name for C2O3
Dicarbon trioxide
* Trick Question! this is a molecular compound, which means there are no metals. Molecular compounds DO use prefix’s, which is why they are used in this answer.
