3.1.8 Inorganic ions Flashcards
1
Q
Inorganic ion
A
- an ion (atom with electric charge)
- that does not contain carbon
- occurs in different concentrations in solution in the cytoplasm and body fluids of organisms
2
Q
Inorganic ion
List
A
Hydrogen ions (H+) Iron ions (Fe2+) Sodium ions (Na+) Phosphate ions (PO43-)
3
Q
Hydrogen ions
A
-determine pH of solutions
└increase H+, decrease pH (more acidic)
-determines functioning of enzymes
4
Q
Iron ions
A
-transports oxygen in haemoglobin
└a protein made of 4 polypeptide chains each with in iron ion in the centre
-oxygen binds to Fe2+ in haemoglobin which temporarily becomes Fe3+ until oxygen is released
5
Q
Sodium ions
A
-cotransport of amino acids and glucose
6
Q
Phosphate ions
A
-aka phosphate group when attached to another molecule
- ATP: bonds between phosphate groups store energy
- DNA/RNA: structure, allows nucleotides to join → polynucleotides
