3.1.6 ATP Flashcards
ATP definition/structure
- adenosine triphosphate
- nucleic derivative
- 1 molecule of ribose
- one molecule of adenine
- 3 phosphate groups
ATP function
Good immediate energy source
- unstabel bonds between phosphate bonds
- cane bt stored for longer than a few seconds
- releases energy in small amounts
- releases energy rapidly in one step
- transferrs energy directly to the reaction requiring it
- diffuses within cells but cant pass out cell
Hydrolysis of ATP
ATP + H20 → ADP + Pi
enzyme ATP hydrolase as a catalyst
Uses of hydrolysis of ATP
Phosphorlation
-inorganic compound can be used to phosphorylate other compounds and make them more reactive
Can be coupled with energy requiring reactions within cells:
Active transport
-change shape of carrier proteins/ move molecules against conc gradient
Secretion
-to form lysosomes
Movement
-for muscle filaments to slide past each other
Metabolic processes
-make macromolecules from their basic units
Condensation of ATP
ADP + Pi → ATP + H20
enzyme ATP synthase as a catalyst
during photosynthesis, or during respiration
