3.1.3- Lipids Flashcards
Lipids
Used for respiration and is the bilayer of plasma membranes
4 lipid groups
Triglyceride (fats and oils)
Phospholipids
Cholesterol
Steroids
Emulsion test for lipids
Crush sample and add ethanol
Get rid of solid then add distilled water
Cloudy white emulsion= lipids present
Functions of lipids in living organisms
Insulate and heat us up
Energy store
Cell membranes
Organ protection
Used for respiration
Hydrophilic
Charger molecules and will mix and dissolve in water
Hydrophobic
Not charged so won’t mix in with water
Saturated
Means a hydrocarbon chain had no c=c double bonds
Unsaturated
Means a hydrocarbon chain has 1 or more C=C double bonds
Triglycerides
One molecule of glycerol with 3 fatty acids attached to it
Phospholipids
found in cell membranes- 1 glycerol, 2 fatty acids & a phosphate group
Triglyceride structure & function
Contain lots of energy- chemical energy in tail released when they are broken down.
Insoluble- doesn’t affect water potential
Hydrophobic fatty acid tails
Phospholipids structure & function
Make up cell membrane bilayers
Hydrophillic heads and hydrophobic tails- water soluble substances can’t easily pass through the centre of cell membrane.
Why are lipids not polymers?
Their monomers aren’t the same.
They are still formed by condensation reactions
