3.1.2b) The different types of circulatory systems Flashcards
Single circulatory system
Blood only passes through the heart once complete circuit of the body
Limits the efficiency of the exchange process so the activity levels of animals with this circulatory systems
Double circulatory system
Blood travels twice through the heart for each circuit of the body
Each circuit only passes through 1 capillary network
High pressure & fast flow of blood can be maintained
Open circulatory system
From the heart into the body cavity
Haemocoel - open body cavity
Transport medium is under low pressure & comes into direct contact with tissues & cells
Closed circulatory system
Blood is enclosed in blood vessels & doesn’t come into contact with body cells
Heart pumps blood around the body under pressure & relatively quickly & returns quickly to the heart substances leave & enter the blood through the walls of the blood vessels
Amount of blood flowing can be adjusted by widening or narrowing blood vessels
Most contain a blood pigment that carries respiratory gases
