Define a skill
A learned action with the intention of bringing about pre-determined results, with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy
Define an open skill

Define an externally paced skill
A skill that is started because of an external factor. The speed and pace of the skill are controlled by external factors eg an opponent
Define a self paced skill
The skill is started when the performer decides to start it. The speed, rate or pace of the skill is controlled by the performer
Define a simple skill
Skills where the performer doesn’t have to process much information or make any decisions
Define a complex skill
A skill that requires greater decision making and more information processing
Define the high-low organisation skill continuum
Refers to how easily a skill can be broken down.
Low organisation skills can be easily broken down into subroutines.
High organisation skills cannot be easily be broken down into subroutines
Define a high organisation skill
A skill that is harder to break down into subroutines
Define a low organisation skill
A skill that is relatively easy to break down into subroutines

Define a positive transfer
When the learning of one skill has a beneficial effect on the learning of another skill
Define negative transfer
When the learning of one skill is hindered by another skill
Define zero transfer
When the learning of one skill does not affect the learning of another skill due to the differences in skill
Define bilateral transfer
When the learning of a skill performed with one limb can be transferred to another limb
