What is the primary job of an investigator?
- Ensure that the boundaries around the casualty are maintained and no further damage is not occurring.
- May be necessary for you to access locked spaces to ensure their integrity, and carry tools to open these spaces.
- Must have an in-depth knowledge of the ship’s layout and systems in your AOR.
What are the four principles of investigation?
Cautiously, thoroughly, report, repeat.

What are the specifications for an investigator’s SCBA?
30 min bottle, doesn’t need to say when going on air, bottle needs at least 4000psi
Where do investigators investigate?
Must constantly rove an assigned area outside the primary fire boundaries.
What do investigators need to report during a fire?
Report any encounters with smoke outside the primary fire and smoke boundaries.
What happens if the fire spreads?
If the fire spreads, then the secondary boundary becomes the primary boundary, and personnel must attack this new threat to the ship.
What are some signs that spaces are effected by casualty?
- Gasket leaking
- Visible from porthole (if installed)
- Panting door body
- Sweating door body
- Air Test Cap (ATC) leaking
How can you fix a door’s problems?
- Tighten down the self locking nuts
- Loosen from hinge side first always
- Loosen ATC remove completely
- Tap as many times as needed for readings to estimate flooding levels, if you hit the ribs of the door, false readings, heavy progressive flooding will easy to distinguish
How big is the area the investigator should be investigating?
Investigation of structural damage must cover a considerable area surrounding the immediate scene of damage, not only on the same level but also on decks above and below the principal casualty.
