What does AFFF stand for?
Aqueous Film Forming Foam
What color is AFFF usually?
A clear to slightly amber colored liquid
What is the mixture of AFFF?
Water or firemain for a mixture of 94% water to 6% AFFF
What type of fires do we use AFFF on?
Primarily used for Bravos fires, it is actually better than water when putting out alpha due to its penetrating characteristics.
What does AFFF do to a fire?
- Film is formed which prevents the escape of vapors
- Layer of foam effectively excludes oxygen
- Water cools the heat
Where are the AFFF systems located?
Compartments or areas where flammable/combustible liquid fires are likely to occur i.e. machinery spaces, fuel pump rooms, flight deck, etc.
How many AFFF stations do we have aboard?
20 on the 2nd deck, 10 port and 10 starboard.
What are the AFFF tanks made of?
90/10 copper-nickel
How many gallons do the AFFF stations hold?
600 gallons of AFFF
How do we get AFFF to the 20 stations?
Reserve tanks located in the hangar bays, HB1 port side and HB3 starboard side.
How many gallons of AFFF do the reserve tanks hold?
3500 gallons of AFFF
What are the reserve tanks rated at?
360 gpm
Where are the transfer pumps located?
Near station 6 fwd mess decks by the drinking fountains and the salad bar and outboard of station 13 right next to the DC office.

What is the handwheel color of AFFF concentrate?
Red and Blue
